Brief & Design Collaboration

Spicers Retreat, a boutique company with beautiful luxury retreats located throughout Australia, approached Comax to manufacture furniture for one of their latest retreats in Hidden Vale.

The design process is parallel to the bespoke furniture process, where Comax collaborates closely with the interior designer to get a deeper understanding of the project requirements and design brief. The brief for Spicers Hidden Vale was to design and manufacture dining chairs for their paddock to plate restaurant, now an award-winning restaurant.

Spicers Retreat altered the design of the dining chair to truly reflect the practicality of the user experience. As a dining chair in a large restaurant is moved regularly through the day-to-day runnings of the business, the fabric is worn and will deteriorate exponentially faster on the top of the chair where it is held, compared to the remainder of the upholstered seat. The Dining chair that Spicers Retreat designed had a vinyl detail to run along the top of the chair to protect it against wear and tear while moving the chair. It’s the ability to make subtle changes to a design that allows a designer to create a more durable piece of furniture and prolong its life span without the need for reupholstery when the fabric.

Prototyping

After an order was placed, Comax then proceeded with the prototyping stage. The prototyping stage involved collaboration between the industrial designers at Comax, wood machinist, upholsterer, and of course the Spicers retreat.

Manufacture

Once the prototype was approved, the production process then proceeded. Throughout the production process quality control was performed regularly and Spicers Retreat was informed of the progress at all stages.

Delivery

Once the furniture production was completed, Spicers Retreat then came to view their furniture and inspect before delivery was booked using a trusted furniture delivery company. Comax then ensured the process of delivery was completed successfully.

Bespoke Large Quantity Production

Comax not only specializes in bespoke furniture but we also have the capacity and machinery to manufacture large quantity furniture with the same attention and care as they give bespoke one-off designs.

Comax uses the same process as they do with custom bespoke items for the prototype stage, once approved, production can run quantities that range up to 200. This ability allows the customer to receive a bespoke item that will stand out against mass-produced furniture.
